#InformedGeneration – School sensitisation.

Towards ending violence against women and girls in Imo State, AfA leverages on three key
strategies VIZ, Prevention, Activism and Policy (PAP). Accordingly, AfA deploys the prevention
and Activism Pillar to bring about significant changes in perception, behaviour and ultimately,
practices that fuel the perpetration of VAWG both in school amongst peers, at home and in the
society at large. The justification is that “Violence against Women and Girls, VAWG” are deeply
rooted behavioural patterns that emanate from religious and cultural beliefs which moulds our
thoughts and consequently manifest in actions that subjugate the feminine gender, constituting
VAWG. Thus, to adequately address this, it is imperative to sensitize school boys and girls in a
bid to change their perception through a guided and participatory discussion on subjects such
as bodily autonomy, communicating boundaries, consent, sexual exploitation and abuse and
methods of prevention including identifying sexual predation, speaking out and reporting.
This will ensure that the incidences of VAWG reduce by a two-way mechanism viz, arming girls
to protect themselves and speak out when they at risk of violation and also, informing boys to
reform their perception and behaviours that constitute VAWG and make them perpetrators.
Having been designed for school-aged boys and girls between the ages of 11-18years, catching
them young is the priority as it will bring about a reformation of mind and attitude at an early
the stage which also makes for sustainability through a breed of informed youngsters.
Hence, AfA will commence A schools’ sensitization campaign at Ten schools in Owerri Municipal,
Owerri West, Owerri North, Oguta, Nwangele, Nkwere, Mbaitolu, Isu, Ikeduru and Mbaise local
government areas of Imo State, beginning Feb 2021.
