Together for Health: Standing with Science to Advance Women’s Health in Nigeria

Today mark World Health Day 2026, and this year’s theme “Together for Health. Stand with Science”, highlights the critical role of science in addressing global health challenges. In Nigeria, this focus is particularly urgent for women and girls, who continue to face preventable health risks ranging from maternal complications to limited access to reproductive healthcare and gender-specific diseases.

Alliances for Africa (AfA) recognized that science, research, and evidence-based interventions are essential to ensuring women and girls receive the care, education, and resources necessary to live a healthy and empowered life.

Across Nigeria, millions of women and girls encounter barriers to quality healthcare, nutrition, and safe living environments. Maternal mortality, inadequate sexual and reproductive health services, and gender-based violence remain pressing concerns, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Environmental challenges, including climate change and pollution, further exacerbate these vulnerabilities.

Despite these obstacles, scientific innovation continues to demonstrate its transformative potential through vaccination programs, maternal health initiatives, advanced diagnostics, and targeted community health campaigns to enhance improved outcomes and saved lives. The evidence is clear: when health interventions are guided by science, women and girls and the communities they serve are sustained and can thrive.

Supporting science is not merely theoretical; it is a practical approach to strengthening health systems, informing policy, and improving outcomes. Standing with science entails:

  • Relying on evidence-based research to guide health decisions rather than misinformation.
  • Empowering female health professionals with the tools and knowledge to deliver quality healthcare.
  • Advocating for policy investments that address the specific health needs of women and girls.

This approach reduces preventable deaths, builds resilient health systems, and prepares communities for future health challenges.

Call to Action

To commemorate World Health Day 2026, AfA calls on all  stakeholders, policymakers, healthcare professionals, educators, community leaders, and citizens to take meaningful action:

  1. Educate and Empower: Implement campaigns to raise awareness among women and girls about preventive health measures, maternal care, and the importance of evidence-based guidance.
  2. Collaborate Across Communities: Partner with local leaders, NGOs, and government agencies to address women’s health challenges collectively.
  3. Invest in Research and Innovation: Support Nigerian scientists and health institutions in developing context-specific solutions for women and girls.
  4. Champion Evidence-Based Policy: Advocate for policies grounded in scientific research that prioritize female health, reproductive rights, and equitable healthcare access.
  5. Promote Community Engagement: Encourage every individual to spread awareness, support health initiatives, and champion science in their communities.

World Health Day presents an opportunity for united action. Together, through science, collaboration, and evidence-based strategies, we can advance health equity, strengthen communities, and protect the lives of women and girls across Nigeria.
