Livelihood Support for Vulnerable Women Impacted by Covid -19

Alliances for Africa kicked off her program on providing livelihood support for the most vulnerable women impacted by the COVID-19, at Umuneke Ngor Autonomous community in Ngor Okpala LGA of Imo state on the 3rd July, 2021.

The program which is funded by the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women and Girls, (UNTF EVAWG), will carter for 15 women in each LG, across the 27 Local Government Area of Imo state.

The call for nomination of beneficiaries were made in the month of May 2021 and was posted across all AfA’s social media platforms as well as networks and coalitions platforms where AfA is represented, in order to reach women in dire need of the support.

Giving the beneficiaries a brief background of the organization, AfA’s Program Officer, Faith Kalagbor, informed that the support necessitated by the negative impact of the pandemic which had dire consequences for women and girls.

Being a women-led organization that is concerned about the welfare of women and girls’, AfA saw a crucial need to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable women and girls including widows, women living with disability, farmers, teachers, petty traders, students, orphans, survivors of violence, the aged, single mothers, health challenged women, segregated and decentralized women, women without source of livelihood, sex workers, widows, women earning less than 500 naira daily.

She thanked the traditional ruler for his swift response, noting that he made it easier to kick off the program in his community.

Reacting, HRH Eze Engr. Sir Frederick Ogechi Nwachukwu Ogboro 1 of Ngor Okpala Autonomous community, while appreciating Alliances for Africa said its not about the gifts but the thoughtfulness exhibited by AfA and the United Nations trust Fund.

They were handed food items and relief materials procured by AfA and distributed by the organization’s team.

Beneficiaries thanked the team and donor, some of them shared their story of how the covid-19 impacted their lives and their sources of income, stating that, the support will go a long way in cushioning the effect of the pandemic.

Relatively, the team has been able to reach out to the vulnerable in five LGAs namely, Ezinihitte, Mbaitoli, Owerri West, Ikeduru and Owerri North. Isu, Njaba, Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu and other LGs in Imo to follow suit.
